Abstract

Disney princess has a pivotal role in constructing identity, especially for children. One of the first generation of Disney Princess is Cinderella (1950) which was adapted from a fairy tale written by Charles Perrault. However, very little research focuses on identity construction of fairytale in an Asian country that is adapted from Disney Princess. Therefore, this paper describes the how Disney is transformed into Nyi Sarikingking. It is a Sundanese version of Cinderella in Indonesia around 1960's. Drawing upon the post-colonial theory, this study focuses on textual analysis of how the identity is constructed by investigating the characteristics, plot, tradition, and values. It also examines the image portrayed in a story. Thus, by comparing the story form the original and the Sundanese version, this paper presents a cultural transformation from Cinderella to Nyi Sarikingkin involving the strategy of mimicry which led to hybridity and ambivalence in the process negotiation and resistance.
